A bright violet color. Currant, dried fig and blackberry waft from the glass. Lively, fresh, focused wine, finishing with strong spiciness.
-Domaine Santa Duc was first established in 1874 in the Southern Rhône cru of Gigondas. Yves stopped selling the crop off to négociants in 1985 in favor of bottling his own wine instead. The winery was recently certified organic in 2012. Yves practices de-budding early in the growing season to lend rigor to the fruit, leaf-pulling to increase circulation, and early harvests to preserve freshness. Yves farms 12.5 hectares oflieux-dits throughout Gigondas. “A foudre-aged blend of 75% Grenache, 15% Syrah and the rest Mourvedre and Cinsault, the 2012 Gigondas Aux Lieux Dits sports a semi-transparent ruby color to go with a terrific bouquet of sweet raspberries, flowers, incense and pepper. This is followed by a medium-bodied, lightly textured and mid-weight Gigondas that excels on its purity, balance and finesse more so than richness or power. As with a lot of Yves's 2012s, the acidity is surprisingly high, and I wouldn't push the aging curve too much.”
