Kara-Tara is a joint-venture between Rüdger van Wyk (2018 Diners Club Young Winemaker of the Year) and José Conde of Stark-Condé Wines. After spending two years at Stark- Condé as an intern and assistant winemaker, Rüdger van Wyk became head winemaker of Kara Tara in 2018, and in the same year was awarded “Young Winemaker of the Year” by Diner’s Club. The name “Kara-Tara” refers to a small town near Knysna, where winemaker Rüdger van Wyk grew up. Translated from the Khoisan, it means “deep dark shadows” and refers to the Karatara river that runs through the town
Only an hour east of Cape Town, the high-lying cool-climate Elgin district, cradled in the ancient sandstone Hottentots Holland Mountains, was traditionally an apple-growing region. Due to the cool temperatures, later-ripening grape varietals such as Pinot Noir show exceptional elegance and fruit quality.
Pinot Noir Grapes are sourced from carefully-selected premium vineyards in the Elgin region. After being crushed into small open tanks, the must is cold-soaked for two days. 30% of the wine is fermented with whole clusters. Only French oak is used for aging, 10% of which is new.
Kara-Tara Pinot Noir is an elegant, lightly-wooded style of Pinot Noir showing classic strawberry and red cherry notes coupled with a hint of spice. A firm, yet silky-smooth tannin structure supports the lovely bright fruit characteristics of the wine.
