Dupré Barbancourt was a Frenchman from the Charente — one of France’s prolific Cognac-producing regions. At that time, Haiti was a French colony. It was considered the land of opportunity for young Frenchmen at the time, and Dupré immigrated there and learned about Rum. He founded his distillery the following year in 1862. In all the time since then, the distillery has never been outside of family hands.
