Bill and Ross Spence started making wine on a lot on Matua road in the late 1960's. Later, they bought a small orchard in New Zealand in the early 1970's, and ended up being the first to produce Sauvignon Blanc in the country. Their first vintage was in 1974, cementing Sauvignon Blanc's foothold and making it the ultimate grape to produce in NZ. From the late 70's into the 90's, they expanded their property holdings into Hawke's Bay and Marlborough. In 2012 Matua was named Einery of the Year at London's International Wine and Spirits Competition.
