90pts Robert Parker
The 2019 Juan Gil Red Blend was produced exclusively for the US market with 45% Monastrell, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Syrah fermented and matured separately for 12 months. It's ripe at 15% alcohol, and the oak is still quite obvious, creamy and spicy. The palate is medium to full-bodied with abundant oak-related flavors and quite a lot of tannin, finishing dry and a little astringent. It has a very specific style. 54,000 bottles were produced. It was bottled in June 2021. Best after 2022.
Winemaker's Notes
This red blend is made from estate vines averaging 50 years old. The vineyards are dry-farmed, without pesticides or herbicides, and hand harvested. Monastrell’s bold fruit is perfectly in balance with the earthy notes of Cabernet and Syrah, producing a blend that shows complexity and balance. Rich in flavor and texture with fresh acidity and finessed tannin structure. Each varietal is fermented in stainless steel and aged for 12 months in French and American oak barrels separately before blending. Explosive aromas of ripe currant, red berries and smoked notes. Rich, powerful and voluminous on the attack, silken and juicy in the mid-palate with excellent length and persistence. Fine, ripe tannins, at once supple and structurally present.
Blend: 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Monastrell, 10% Syrah
History
Since 1916, when Juan Gil Jiménez had the winery built, only one clear idea has moved the following generations in charge of the same: Doing a good job and being prideful of the Juan Gil name and commercial trademark. Juan Gil Guerrero, a founder’s son, firstly, and then his grandson Juan Gil González, improved and consolidated the winery, applied the traditional knowledge of their job transmitted from parents to children. Nowadays, the fourth generation, linking the tradition with the technical revolution, is the one that enjoys the result of the work done by the predecessors. The international recognition of the quality of our wines is summarized in the name of Juan Gil.
