87pts Whiskey Advocate
Sweet cherries, bubble gum, and fresh blueberry on the nose, along with nougat, honey-roasted peanuts, and milk chocolate. The palate has flavors of clove-studded orange, spice, and the chewed end of a pencil. It's light-bodied and verges on thin when water is added, so be judicious. The finish is gentle, with peppery oak, cinnamon, and espresso bean. This is a new higher proof and the whiskey is now non-chill filtered, so don't be surprised by a little haze if you add water or ice.
85-89pts Wine Enthusiast
The first sniffings detect notes of black pepper and oak resin; aeration adds stone-dry scents of minerals, slate, and sage. The palate entry is lean, semisweet, intensely grainy, and satisfying; at midpalate the whiskey lies well on the tongue, sweet, grainy, medium plump, and spicy. Finishes spicy. A very solid rye whiskey that deserves a larger audience.
History
Here you have the oldest of all Beam family whiskeys. Established in 1810 by the upright, forward-thinking Abraham Overholt, his namesake whiskey is recognized today as the oldest enduring American Rye in the United States. Made and sold without interruption, this whiskey has seen a thing or two over the centuries. Bottled with a commitment to quality exemplified by an assertive Rye taste, Overholt is a powerful ally to bartenders who prefer it for their cocktails. At one time, it was the most popular spirit in the country. One the Beam family took note of and vowed to continue distilling the way Abraham wanted: proudly true to its industrious spirit.
